Natureskating
This sport is truly addictive! There are so many elements of tour skating that I particularly enjoy. When the ice is smooth, clear black ice without a slowing layer of snow, the sense of freedom is incredible! As you skate, you can hear the ice 'singing,' which sounds fascinating and fun.
You can glide swiftly across the ice wherever you want, leaving your marks on the clear surface. Tour skating shares a lot in common with freeriding on skis—the freedom to move as you please.
The quality, color, shapes, and patterns of the ice captivate me. Large temperature variations help create these unique shapes and patterns. Sometimes the ice creaks and cracks, which can make the sport a bit too thrilling at times.
The best time for tour skating can be very short. Sometimes the window of opportunity lasts only a few hours or days. In February 2020, we skated on Lake Saimaa's Yövesi. It was an unforgettable day. The ice was perfect! Moments like that are especially precious because you may never get another exactly like it.
